Expressions used in Greetings

 

 

“Hello”, “Hi”, “Good Morning”, “How are you doing”, “It’s nice seeing you”… There are plenty of ways to say hello. It depends on the time of the day, the relationship you have with the person you are greeting, the situation… 

 Formal:

  • Good morning →00.00 until 12.00am
  • Good afternoon → 12.00am until 06.00pm
  • Good noon → 12.00am o’clock
  • Good evening → 06.00pm until before time to go to bed
  • Good night → when it is time to go to bed
  • Good day → no time related
  • How are you? → I am pretty good thanks.
  • How is everything? → I am just fine, thank you.
  • How are things? → Everything is all right, thank you.
  • How is your life? → I am very well.

 

 The first time you meet someone

  • How do you do? (first meeting) à How do you do?
  • It’s nice meeting/ to meet you. → It’s nice meeting/ to meet you too.
  • It’s a pleasure meeting/  to meet you. → It’s a pleasure meeting/  to meet you too.

 

 The second time you meet someone

  • It’s nice seeing / to see you again. à It’s nice seeing/ to see you too.
  • It’s a pleasure meeting/ to meet you again. à It’s a pleasure meeting/ to meet you too.

 

Informal:

  • Hello! à Hello!
  • Hi! à Hi!
  • What’s up? à Nothing much.  You?
  • What’s going on? à Not much. You?
  • How are you doing? à I’m doing good. / Pretty good. / Fine thanks. You?
  • How’s life? à Not too bad.

 

Common ways of saying Goodbye 

Formal:

  • Have a nice day/ week/ weekend.
  • I look forward to our next meeting.
  • Until we meet again/ next week.
  • Take care.
  • It was nice seeing/ to see you again.
  • Good night.

 

Informal:

  • Bye!
  • Bye bye!
  • See you later/ See you soon/ Talk to you later.
  • I’ve got to get going/ I must be going.
  • Take it easy.
  • I’m off.
